St. Cecilia Cathedral

Built in a Spanish Renaissance Revival style, St. Cecilia's Cathedral began construction in 1905 and was consecrated in 1959. It is the only cathedral named after St. Cecilia. St. Cecilia, by preaching had converted four hundred persons.  She was arrested, and condemned to be suffocated in the baths. She was shut in for a night and a day, and the fires were heaped up, and made to glow and roar their utmost, but Cecilia did not even break out into perspiration through the heat. An executioner was sent to cut off her head. The man struck thrice without being able to sever the head from the trunk. He left her bleeding, and she lived three days. Crowds came to her and she preached to them or prayed. At the end of that period she died, and was buried by Pope Urban and his deacons.  St. Cecilia is the patroness of musicians and Church music because, as she was dying, she sang to God. It is also written that as the musicians played at her wedding she ‘sang in her heart to the Lord’.

Joslyn Castle

In 1903, George and Sarah Joslyn completed one of Nebraska’s greatest homes—a 35-room mansion atop a hill on Omaha’s outskirts. The Joslyn Castle is an example of Scottish Baronial Revival architecture, a romantic outgrowth of the 19th-century Gothic Revival movement.  Examples of Scottish Baronial hallmarks include crow-stepped gables, crenellations, and small turrets or bartizans, and the style can be found in innumerable public and private buildings of this era throughout Great Britain, the United States, and Canada.  Much has been made of the influence of architect John McDonald’s Scottish ancestry on the choice of Scottish Baronial style for the Castle.
